Additional acoustics (if this option is not listed, please ask about the possibilities)

Our artworks already noticeably improve the acoustics in a room as standard. In the standard version they dampen on average about 60% of the sound that hits them. This is often sufficient for many rooms to reduce disturbing reverberation and create more tranquility.

Do you experience more reverberation or a room that needs just a little extra dampening? Then you can opt for additional acoustics. Depending on your situation, there are three possible levels:

  • Essential - 60% damping – frame depth 4.1 cm
  • Extra - 80% damping – frame depth 5.2 cm
  • Ultimate - 100% damping – frame depth 7.2 cm

For the extra options, we add an additional layer of felt to the back of the artwork. The thicker this layer, the greater the sound absorption.

Visually, nothing changes on the artwork itself. Only the frame becomes slightly deeper. Otherwise, you won't see anything — except that your space will become noticeably calmer and more comfortable.

Benefits of additional acoustics:

  • Choice of 60%, 80% or up to 100% damping
  • Suitable for light and strong reverberation
  • Extra layer of felt on the back of the artwork
  • Damping comparable to an open window (at maximum damping)
  • Invisible solution: only the frame depth increases

Discover our simple steps to find the ideal artwork that reflects your personality, transforms your space, and ensures better acoustics. Ready to take your interior to the next level?

Step 1: Determine the purpose of the artwork

Before choosing an artwork, it's important to determine its purpose. A Piece of Art can be more than just decoration; it can make a statement, evoke a feeling, and even improve the acoustics of a room. Here are a few considerations to help you determine the purpose of your artwork:

  1. Statement or Harmony: Start by establishing the intended purpose of the artwork. Consider whether you are looking for an artwork that seamlessly integrates with the colors and atmosphere of your interior, or if you prefer a striking piece that contrasts with the surrounding space. Discover inspiring stories and tips on our Get Inspired page to see how others have transformed their spaces with Pieces of Art and to get ideas for your own interior.
  1. Functionality: In addition to aesthetics, an artwork can also serve a functional purpose. For example, consider whether your artwork needs to have sound-absorbing properties to improve the acoustics of your space. Pieces of Art of various sizes can impact acoustics, making them both decorative and functional. Read here more about how Pieces of Art not only offer visual appeal but can also improve the acoustics of your space.

Step 3: Choose the size of the artwork

At Pieces of Art, we understand that choosing the right size artwork is essential for creating the perfect atmosphere in your space. But how do you choose the right size?

The ideal size depends on several factors, including the size of your space, your personal taste, and the extent of the acoustic problem you want to solve.

Pieces of Art offers a variety of sizes to choose from:

  •   Square: 60x60 cm
  •   M: 60x80 cm
  •   L: 40x120 cm
  •   XL: 80x120 cm
  •   XXL: 120x180 cm

How do you choose the right size?

Size of your space and your personal taste
  • For a small space or to add a subtle accent, the square size (60x60 cm) or size M (60x80 cm) are perfect. These sizes fit well in hallways, small rooms, or as part of a gallery wall.
  • Do you have a more spacious wall that you want to fill? Then choose size L (40x120 cm) or XL (80x120 cm). These elongated sizes fit well above sofas, sideboards, or in hallways and also offer significant sound absorption.
  • For large spaces where you really want to make an impact and simultaneously improve acoustics, the XXL size (120x180 cm) is ideal. This size perfectly fills large empty walls and creates an impressive statement in any room, while also providing maximum sound absorption.

Unsure which size best suits your space? Use painter's tape to outline the contours of different sizes on your wall and get a visual impression of how each size will look.

Acoustic needs

When choosing the right size artwork, it is important to consider the acoustics of your space. Do you suffer from reverberation or poor sound quality? Then an artwork with sound-absorbing properties can offer an excellent solution.

Is your space large and your reverberation even larger? Then it's wise not to think too small and to choose larger artworks and/or hang multiple artworks in the room that can absorb sound. But sometimes 1 artwork can already do a lot. To give you an idea, here is the experience of Denise Kortlever who has a large space where the acoustics were far from optimal. Her problem was mainly in the kitchen, but it extends into the dining area and then the living area. To solve her acoustic problem, she first only hung artwork Noah in her kitchen. Not enough to solve her entire acoustic problem. She also didn't place the artwork super ideally in terms of acoustics (but certainly in terms of looks!!), but still, this was her reaction:

'Well, the difference is really obvious! For the whole space, we still need a little more m2 of felt, but it's just BIZARRE how much this one artwork already makes a difference and how beautiful it looks. Really a huge tip!' said Denise Kortlever.

So, even though 1 artwork in such a large space will not solve her entire acoustic problem, it has already helped immensely at her home. If you have a smaller space, 1 artwork might already solve your entire acoustic problem. Read more below about how to best choose your artwork if you want to improve your acoustics.

Step 4: Improve the acoustics of your room

To improve the acoustics in your room, it is good to take the following points into account:

- Discover the areas where sound problems (mostly) occur, such as echoes or noise pollution. The places where most nuisance from reverberation occurs are often the places with many hard materials and where people gather. For example, the sitting area where you chat with friends, or the dining area where you discuss the day with your family at the end of the day, but also at your workplace where you make many calls, you want the acoustics to be good. The places where the sound reflects the most will be where you will benefit most from your acoustic solution on the wall. So consider placing artworks in strategic places where sound absorption is needed.

- For optimal sound absorption, place artworks in places where sound is reflected, such as opposite hard surfaces or in large open spaces. These could be, for example, walls opposite windows, concrete walls, or large open spaces with little furniture.

- The more felt artworks you hang in the room, the more sound absorption you will experience. Therefore, consider placing multiple artworks on different walls in the room.

- Choose the size of the artworks based on the size of the room and the desired level of sound absorption. Large artworks such as the XXL (120x180) can absorb more sound than smaller sizes.
